Dorchester Community Food Co-op

Building a Healthy, Sustainable & Economically Viable Community

Future Co-op Site Springs to Life!

We announced two weeks ago that the Dorchester Community Food Co-op will be built at the corner of Bowdoin Street and Topliff Street and that the design plans will soon begin. Naturally, it will take a bit of time for the building to be built, as we continue to raise money (donate here!), work with the architects, and commence the actual construction. What will be happening at the site in the meantime? Now you will be able to visit the location for exciting events at the co-op site before the co-op physically exists!

The location has been vacant for years, and Sustainability Guild, one of our partner organizations, has been working hard at that location over the last year. Sustainability Guild works with community residents to take vacant lots in Dorchester and Roxbury and breathe new life into them by cleaning them, building raised bed planters for growing food, adding benches and tables, as well as programming them with skill share workshops, music, green living, and in general creating active public spaces.

Our site is now ready to use!  The Guild will be partnering with the Co-op to have programs on the site, so that it will be utilized in a positive way and will provide learning and skill share opportunities for the community even before the new co-op building is in place.

The Topliff/Bowdoin Street lot will open on Saturday, July 13 and activities will continue on various days throughout the summer. Programs will include workshops on health, fitness, healthy eating, movement, art and culture, all led by community residents and organizations. This season, Fresh Fridays, our community supported cafe, will also take place on our new site–stay tuned for more details.

Schedule of events 11AM to 3PM Saturday July 13:

  • Meet the Food Co-op– the future anchor tenant of the new building
  • Meet the Developer: Dorchester Bay EDC
  • Meet partner organizations: Sustainability Guild, Third Sector New England, Coop Fund of New England, and other community organizations, local entrepreneurs, and neighbors from across Dorchester
  • Food! Music!

Join us to celebrate the first of many great community events at the home of the future co-op!
