Dear Friends of the Dorchester Community Food Coop
Thanksgiving is approaching quickly and the smell of home-cooked meals is already winding through many of our homes. Thank you to those of you who have already supported the Food Co-op and Winter Farmers’ Market with your words, wisdom and resources. Planning for the food co-op continues, and our Kickstarter Winter Farmers’ fundraiser is chugging along, but we need your continued support. In order to make this winter’s market a reality, we are asking you to “Team Up for Turkey Day”: help us to reach $2500 by 5 p.m. on Thursday by contributing what you can to our Kickstarter campaign. This step will put us well on our way to our goal of $5000.
We are grateful for our friends and collaborators at all levels. At a recent urban agriculture hearing, the city’s Director of Food Initiatives noted that the Dorchester Winter Farmers’ Market is the first winter market in Boston. This is a landmark achievement. We are changing the way food is delivered and restoring basic food access to those who need it most. The issue at hand — filling mouths with healthy food, filling bellies with fresh produce — is so essential that it gets, literally, to the core of human living. Creating a market in Dorchester–where diabetes, obesity, and poverty pose serious challenges–is particularly significant. By bringing good food to Codman Square, by accepting EBT cards and participating in “Bounty Bucks,” by making a place for all people to gather in the winter, we can grow healthy together.
We are grateful for our community. Codman Square, the location of our Winter Market, is a rich center of cultural diversity, with many Caribbean cultures represented. Walking down Washington Street, one finds Haitian Boutiks, Jamaican restaurants, Dominican merchants. It is a neighborhood of sharing. The same Great Hall that will house our market is also a school, offices for a health center, and a space for community events, such as Dorchester Open Studios. Every aspect of the neighborhood is made through collaboration. We ask that you join with us in furthering this effort.
We are grateful for your support.
