Food Coop Update: September Edition

Dear Friends of the Dorchester Community Food Co-op:

This is the September edition of the monthly update. Thank you all for being so supportive, especially to the neighborhood associations who have been so hospitable and welcoming us into their meetings. Let us know if you can get on the agenda of your neighborhood group meeting, or if you would like to sponsor a “house party” to spread the word. We have fliers in three languages that we can provide. (English flier is attached–feel free to print and post!)

Here is what’s been happening and what we are planning:

Co-op Ambassador Training and information session

There is another Co-op Ambassador Training session this coming Friday, September 30 from 10am to noon in the Multipurpose Room at 450 Washington Street, Dorchester. (We have been asked to hold one “training session” during the day for folks who can’t make evening meetings. In the future, we will hold these in the evenings as well!) At the training session you will learn the basics of how a food co-op works, as well as the specifics of how the Dorchester Community Food Co-op is progressing. We hope this information will help you join us in spreading the word. This is a great way to get involved, and we are looking forward to you working with us to visit more neighborhood groups and community gatherings across Dorchester.  We are creating a buzz!

Save the Date: $5 Meal Challenge

Want to prove that you’re a great cook?  Think you can feed your family without breaking the bank? The Dorchester Community Food Co-op announces its $5 Meal Challenge, in which participants are encouraged to make a healthy dish big enough to feed a family (at least two adult portions and two child portions) using ingredients that add up to $5 or less.  Entrants will bring their dishes to share with the community, potluck-style, and can also enter them into our contest.  Judges from local Dorchester restaurants will score each dish, and the winning chef takes home a fabulous prize!  Entrance is FREE, so everyone is welcome to come with a dish and try their neighbors’ cheap, healthy meals!
This event will take place sometime over the weekend of October 21-23.  Be sure to checkhttps://dotcommcoop.wordpress.com/ for updates, and get ready to get cookin’!” Want to help plan this? Want to volunteer to be a community judge? Contact Sarah atsarah.cadorette@gmail.com

Coop Survey

We are looking forward to including all of you in the Co-op planning by asking you to fill out a survey we have developed . The Survey asks questions we need to consider as we move forward. This will be YOUR store and therefore it’s necessary to have YOUR input in this process. You can find the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L5VMQDC . It will only take 5 minutes! Please fill it out, and please forward the link to Dorchester friends and neighbors who may be interested in the Co-op.

Winter Farmers Market

The biggest news this month is that we are planning to sponsor a Dorchester-Wide Winter Farmers Market from January to March, 2012. The farmers markets this summer have been a big success, and this year we hope to continue access to farm fresh food by holding an indoor Farmers Market for 12 weeks.  We have begun recruiting farmers to attend the market as vendors, and are finalizing the choice of an indoor space. There are several small grants that we have applied for that will fund this project, but more money is needed. If you know of any possible funders, let us know! This project will not only continue the success of the summer markets, but will also be a building block for the Food Co-op. There will be packaged specialty foods as well as fresh produce. If you have any suggestions for a local specialty food business you would like to see there, tell us! Contact Ben at dotcommcoop@gmail.com

As usual, we encourage everyone to “follow” us on Twitter and to “like” us on Facebook to get daily updates as well as information on healthy eating, the food movement, and more! Our interns Ben Sommer, Sarah Cadorette and Joel Wool are doing a great job meeting with new folks, organizing the upcoming events, and keeping our Webpage, Facebook, and Twitter accounts “tweeting”

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone interested in the Food Co-op, and encourage them to write to us to get on our email list!
